Steps & Traditions in a Thai Wedding Ceremony
1. Buddhist Merit Making Ceremony
As Thai culture is deeply influenced by Buddhism, Merit Making is an important step to ensure the couple’s prosperous married life. The ceremony will commence in the early morning of the wedding day, during which the groom and bride usually invite 9 monks to their place. After offering food, the monks will bless the couple with good fortune and wealth.
2. Khan Maak Procession
Following the Merit Making ceremony, the groom will lead the Khan Maak parade at the auspicious time with his family and friends. When the groom arrives at the bride’s place, he must walk past the symbolic doors set up by the bridesmaids and the bride’s family. In order to pass through the symbolic doors, the groom must follow their orders, such as saying ‘I love you’ or giving them money.
3. Proposing and Checking the Dowry
After passing all the doors, the groom will pick up the bride, and the groom’s representative will ask for the bride’s hand in marriage from her parents. Afterwards, the groom will offer the dowry (Sin-Sod Thong-Mun), and both parents will spread auspicious cereal crops on it.
4. Engagement Ceremony
At the auspicious time, the groom and bride exchange engagement rings in the presence of their parents and witnesses. This step symbolizes the commitment between the couple.
5. Paying Respect to Elders
Because Thai society places great importance on showing respect to elders, this sentiment is also reflected in the wedding ceremony. The couple will sit in front of their parents or elders to express gratitude and ask for forgiveness. Then, the parents will tie holy threads around their wrists and give them valuable gifts.
6. Sai Mongkol (Blessed White Thread) Ritual
After receiving the holy threads, they will have the Sai Mongkol Ritual to symbolize the couple’s union. In this blessing ritual, Sai Mongkol is looped into a circle and placed on their heads.
7. Rod Nam Sang (Water Pouring) Ceremony
Following the Sai Mongkol (Blessed White Thread) Ritual, the couple sits side by side, with the bride always on the left of the groom. The guests will pour ceremonial water from a conch shell over their hands and bless them.
8. Bedding Ceremony
The last step of the Thai Wedding Ceremony takes place in the bedroom. The senior happy couple will prepare the bed with two pillows and auspicious items on it. Then, their parents will teach them about the lessons of married life and bless their couple life.
