Steps & Traditions in a Thai Wedding Ceremony
1. Shinto Prayer Reading Ritual
Traditionally, the Japanese wedding ceremony is held at a shrine. However, now it can also be held at a hotel, with a Shinto Priest and Shrine Maiden (Miko) conducting the ceremony. The ceremony begins with the Shinto Priest reading a ritual prayer and blessing the couple.
2. Exchange of Cups
Following the Prayer Reading Ritual, the Shrine Maiden will offer sake (Sacred wine) to the couple and proceed with the Exchange of Cups (Sankon-no-Gi), where they drink sake from three cups. The first cup is to show gratitude to their ancestors, the second cup is to bless the couple’s relationship, and the third cup is to bless their future descendants.
3. Sacred Dance and Tamagushi Offerings
In this step, they will show respect to the gods, which may involve a Kagura Dance performed by the Shrine Maiden or the offering of Tamagushi (A Shinto offering) to the gods, or both.
4. Exchange of Vow
After offering their respect to the gods, the couple will exchange vows in front of the guests and the Shinto Priest.
5. Exchange of Wedding Rings
Lastly, the bride and groom will exchange rings to symbolize their commitment to each other.
